Don't chat with strangers on the Internet

My name is Florence. I like to go to the library at school to use the computers when I need help with homework. Once I found a chat room where kids help other kids with school.

Gulliver - Internet safety

Someone named Gulliver told me he got good grades. He sent me a link and it did not look like it would be bad. I saw some bad things when I clicked on the link, but I just could not help it, so I clicked another link like the first one.

I was surprised that my friend Samantha was also in the library. She wanted to know why I was surfing bad sites on the Internet. I told her I clicked the wrong button, but she knew I was lying. She had just seen everything I did.

Internet Safety is Important!

Sam did not understand how I got to the sites. The school is supposed to have a filter to protect kids from going to bad sites. I told Sam about Gulliver and how everything was his fault since he said he would help me.

Sam reminded me how my parents, teachers, and friends warned me not to chat with strangers. She explained that it was really my fault since I made a bad choice to talk to a stranger online.

When Sam wanted to know if this was the first time, I had to tell her the truth. It was not my first time.I had gotten curious. It was like my mind kept going back to whatI saw on the Internet. I thought looking a little wouldn’t hurt.

Sam helped me see that Gulliver did not care about what was good for me. Looking at bad stuff can hurt me, and I have a hard time getting those Internet pictures out of my mind now. I wish I could erase them.

We told our librarian, Mr. Jensen, about what happened. He will block those sites. Sam said I should talk to my mom and dad,but I did not want to. I was afraid they would be upset with me and not let me go on the Internet ever again.
