The Old Compass

  • #3- One-Armed Bandit - A Wild West Story for Kids on Gambling

An Entertaining Family Audio Drama and Kids' Magazine!

    ButchFace

Howdy! My name is Butch and I'm a talking horse.

I am one of the main characters in this "Old Compass" kids magazine and audio adventure. Some say One-armed Bandit is a story for children, but I know your whole family will enjoy my western style gambling tale. You see, there are a lot of kids who don't know much about gambling, so when young Clayton showed up here in Daisytown, I thought I would let him know about Mr. Armstrong and his gambling addiction.

    One-armed Bandit - Gambling

I'll explain the whole thing about addiction!

So if you not afraid to walk on down the street of our western town with me and your schoolmate Clayton, come along! Parents can join as a member of kidscharacterbuilding.com and download some activity sheets for you to do while you listen.

It's Wild West day at the school!

Butch the talking horse - Gambling So it was perfectly normal for Clayton to come all dress as a cowboy. Unfortunately or not for him, I'll let you decide, his classmate Lucy kept a close eye on him. Can you blame her? You see there have been strange happenings at the school, people disappearing for a while, students going on strange adventures, and doors leading kids like you into places you only hear of in fiction books. I think you should hear this story. You'll also hear about Emily, an older student, and the surprising offer she received from Tyronne. She'll have to make a hard decision. I can't help to wonder what would you do if you were in her shoes?

Did Clayton really go to a western town? He didn't have that big belt buckle when he first came to school, his boots now have horse manure on them and he smells like a barn!

    What do you think?

    ...Lucy

    Noranda Reading - Gossiping story

What started like an ordinary day in the life of 10th-grade student Noranda soon turned into a mysterious adventure. First, her classmate Tricia told her some gossip she heard from the very popular Susan Brown; a schoolmate, Jade, really messed things up while babysitting at the Austin’s house. Responsus Part 1 - A character building adventure on moral courage and gossiping.

Follow Noranda and Sebastian on a their mysterious adventure as they learn about moral courage!

    Kursten

    Hello my name is Kursten!

I'm a reporter for The Old Compass Magazine. My task is to report on events in and around the school. I have an audio recording of strange events that took place. I'd like you to listen to this story with me. It's a story that happened to Noranda and Sebastian two schoolmates of mine. Would you beleive that they met some strange characters and were chased by hundreds of bees?

Kids mysteries are common at The Old Compass

Kursten showing moral courageThis might be the first time you come to our school and meet us. I hope you stay for a while because I could sure use a hand in trying to figure out what is going on. Why don't you read and listen to this adventure on moral courage and see what I have gathered so far? Here is a summary of what I found out about Responsus Part 1.

    Facts about the adventure

  • My neighbor’s pets

    Neighbors note - Integrity

You thought being a responsible kid was having to do chores, such as taking out the garbage, loading the dishwasher or looking after your younger siblings for a few minutes. Well, you’re right - those are part of being responsible.

Surprise! There is more to being responsible than just doing stuff. As a person, whether you are a kid or grown up, you also have moral responsibility. What on earth is that, you wonder?

Moral responsibility can be tricky but important. For example, suppose you promise your elderly neighbours that you would feed their pets while they are away for a month’s holiday.

    Pets

During that month your mom and dad later decide to go on a camping trip for four or five days. It would be your moral responsibility to find a friend or a neighbour to feed the cats while you are away camping.

    Camp Fire

But what if you choose to ignore feeding the pets or forget about the poor animals while you’re on the camping trip?

Does that mean it’s not your fault if the pets go hungry or die of starvation?

    Hungry DogDS

I think you know the answer… you would get praise for being a good responsible kid if you looked after the pets’ well being whether it was you doing the feeding or not.

You would get blamed if the pets suffered. You would not feel good about it either when you stopped to think about it.

    Noranda and friendDS

In the same way, Noranda wanted to find out if Jade acted responsibly while babysitting.

She also needed to know if Susan Brown and Tricia were acting responsibly by spreading rumours about Jade’s babysitting.

Like Noranda in the story, sometimes in your life there will be a little stirring inside of you pushing you to seek out some truth about other people instead of listening to gossip.

    Seek the truth

When you take the steps to find what really happens and what was really said, you may discover some surprising answers.

You will also discover things you didn’t know about yourself. It’s a journey worth taking.
